How to treat laziness?

Whenever we lack in energy to get up and get our work done. When we lack enthusiasm make our prayers, or to study, or to work on improving ourselves. When we delay our activities and get them messy done in a rush at the last minute. And when this becomes a habit, it’s laziness!

Laziness is the lack of enthusiasm to do something even though you know you should.

The term laziness was mentioned twice in the Qur’an, associated with prayer. Why? because we should be most active when we perform our five daily prayers. When we are in conversation with Allah so prayer is one of the most important acts of worship. If we make it on time we will be able to make other acts of worship full of energy and enthusiasm.

”Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for prayer, they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little. [Al-Nisa 4: 142]

”And nothing prevents their contributions from being accepted from them except that they disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger, and that they came not to prayer except in a lazy state, and that they offer not contributions but unwillingly.” [Al-Tawbah, verse 54]

also was mentioned in the following Hadeeth:

Narrated Abu Huraira Allah’s Apostle said:  “Satan puts three knots at the back of the head of any of you if he is asleep. On every knot he reads and exhales the following words. ‘The night is long, so stay asleep.’ When one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone. And when one performs ablution, the second knot is undone. And when one prays the third knot is undone and one gets up energetic with a good heart in the morning. otherwise one gets up lazy and with a mischievous heart.” [Bukhari]

Prophet Muhammad used to mention laziness daily in his duaa:

O Allaah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being over powered by men.’

How to begin to overcome and kick the habit of laziness:

  1. Seek help and turn to Allah to help you treat laziness:

Allah says in the Qur’an: [And seek help in patience and prayer and truly it is extremely heavy and hard except for al-khashi’un [i.e. the true believers in Allah – those who obey Allah with full submission, fear much from His Punishment, and believe in His Promise (Paradise) and in His Warnings (Hell)]. [Al Baqara 2:45]

Also a good tip is to repeat this dua often:

O Allaah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being over powered by men.

  1. Make prayers on time with Khusho’:

Try to be the first to enter to the mosque, to give your prayers it’s full time. Try not to recite little of Qur’an. Don’t forget your after prayers remembrance. And don’t miss your night prayers.

Try to start your day with the Fajir prayer on time and in the mosque. And try to make your prayers the starting point of renewing your energy and intentions all the day.

  1. Live a balanced and healthy life:

we need to follow our Prophet guideline which splits our diet into thirds: rather than overburdening the stomach, keep one portion for air, one for water, and one for food.

When we follow this hadeeth we won’t feel full or tired, we will feel fresh and healthy and we will have more energy to get up and do our work.

Also be aware that little nutrition lead to tiredness, which is another cause of laziness.

  1. Keep away the unproductive habits:

Like watching TV, swiping through Facebook.

Just try to make those habits more beneficial and try as much as you can to use them to spread or gain knowledge.

Also try to fill your time as much as you can with good activities such as reciting Qura’n, reading, blogging, watching documentaries, exercise,..

  1. Set high goals:

High goals lead to feel high responsible and less lazy and make you figure out why are you here.

Have high goals for your small family,your work and your community so you will feel energetic and responsible and won’t feel lazy.

He says in the Holy Qur’an , “[Allah] does not place a burden on a soul more than it can bear.” [AL Baqara 2:286]

  1. Sleep well:

the amount of sleep we get determines the type of day that will follow.

According to some scientific publications, sleeping for more than 7-8 hours can cause laziness.

We are in Ramadan, and normally we tend to be lazy in Ramadan. So it is the best time to start overcoming laziness. Challenge your self with us to overcome laziness for the next week.
