Would you like that for your mother or sister?

A young man once came to the prophet peace be upon him in the mosque while he was sitting with his companions and said: “O Messenger of Allah, give me permission to commit adultery.” He dare to say that in front of the companion and the prophet peace be upon him.

The companions turned to rebuke him telling him to shut up, but the prophet peace be upon him said: “come here”. The young man came closer to the prophet peace be upon him and the prophet told him to sit down in front of him.

The Prophet said, “Would you like that for your mother?” The man said, “No, by Allah, may I be sacrificed for you. People would not like it for their mothers.”

The Prophet said, “Would you like that for your daughter?” The man said, “No, by Allah, may I be sacrificed for you. People would not like it for their daughters.”

The Prophet said, “Would you like that for your sister?” The man said, “No, by Allah, may I be sacrificed for you. People would not like it for their sisters.”

The Prophet said, “Would you like that for your aunts?” The man said, “No, by Allah, may I be sacrificed for you. People would not like it for their aunts.”

The young man asked the prophet to pray for him that Allah may purify his heart. The Prophet placed his hand on him and he said, “O Allah, forgive his sins, purify his heart, and guard his chastity.”

The young man said “when I entered the mosque, the thing that I liked most is adultery and when I left the mosque, the thing that I hated most is adultery” and he never committed this sin after that.

Although what the young man said was very un-acceptable, the prophet peace be upon him didn’t rebuke him. He excused his young age and that it is normal for him to love adultery.

The Prophet peace be upon him changed the young man’s way of thinking and drove him to the point where he hated adultery but without accusing him of having weak faith or accusing him of being a sinner.

This is how Muslims should treat others, excuse others, saying good words to others, and advise them without being harsh on them.

Always keep in mind that whatever you do to others will happen to you.
